What about the SpaceX IPO?

The Piton Investment Team, during one of its regular meetings, discussed the phenomenon of the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of SpaceX (SPCX). The event had already generated widespread attention unprecedented for such an event. It is far too early to generalize about the value of the stock or the company for the future, but the team has been monitoring and assessing the best stance for Piton clients with regard to SPCX for some time, and reviewed their stance today. “By our established screening metrics, SpaceX does not meet our criteria for Piton Portfolios, but we do recognize that the SpaceX IPO is an exceptional event,” noted Piton’s Senior Vice-President of Research, Chuck D. Etzweiler, MBA, CIMA®, CFP®, CMT. “We pay attention to our clients’ interest on an individual basis all the time, so we are aware that there is a broad spectrum from enthusiasm to caution among our clients,” adds Piton CEO, Founder and Senior Wealth Advisor Michelle Clary. If a Piton client does have exposure to SpaceX in their investments managed by Piton, it is most likely as a portion of an Exchange Traded Fund that resides in one of Piton’s models. This placement allows Piton clients a means to have indirect investment, but in a managed structure, so that, in the event of volatility, there is active management at play to mitigate risk. This approach reflects the broader perspective of the Piton Investment Team: to find means for clients to benefit from opportunities but remain rigorous about keeping investments in line with clients’ risk tolerance and aligned with their values and goals.
