The Piton Investment Team regularly monitors economic data and likes to look “under the hood” at the drivers of changes, to help assess what investments represent better opportunities in the current economic environment. Among the data points is the progression of GDP (Gross Domestic Product). The Bureau of Economic Analysis this week published its Advance Estimate of GDP for the 2nd Quarter of 2026, which reported an increase at the annual rate of 1.5%. That headline report might not seem encouraging, so the team looked into some data underlying that figure (published at https://bea.gov/news/2026/gdp-advance-estimate-2nd-quarter-2026.)
Other perspectives on GDP can be relevant for investment opportunities. This first chart shows “real GDP” (= adjusted for inflation) measured in quarterly changes rather than at the annual rate, which then has Q2 rising 2.1% over Q1. By this measure, the rate for Q2 does not stand in as stark a contrast to Q1 as the headline number could suggest.
Also of interest is what components fueled growth and which lagged, shown in this second chart:
The chart shows strong consumer spending and investment as the drivers, with government spending and imports on the negative side. As the report summarizes, “Compared to the first quarter, the deceleration in real GDP in the second quarter reflected a downturn in government spending and decelerations in investment and exports that were partly offset by an acceleration in consumer spending. Imports increased more in the second quarter than in the first quarter.” These contours can suggest companies that would be attractive investments, if they are ones that would benefit from these positive drivers, while the team might take a cautious look at companies more exposed to other factors.
The Piton Investment Team will monitor the updates to come, of course along with other economic data and assessments of many individual businesses. All these factors funnel into the strategy and assessment process that the Team utilizes to update client portfolios, always with the priorities directed toward the goals and values of Piton clients.
