The Piton Investment Team is always looking for and researching forward-looking investment opportunities for clients’ portfolios. In addition, the team also remains attentive to clients when they express interest in some particular investment. Piton’s portfolios have their money, and Piton’s mission is to support clients’ life goals, so advisors work to have the portfolios serve clients financially but also align with their wishes.

One recent example of client interest leading to deliberations of the Piton Investment Team is the Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, or SpaceX. High profile accomplishments by SpaceX, along with the company’s high-profile founder, Elon Musk, have contributed to interest in investing in the company. As of today, stock in SpaceX does not trade publicly (though there have been private investment options with limited availability), but reports that SpaceX has filed for an Initial Public Offering (IPO), have fueled still more interest in investing.

The team anticipates volatility in SpaceX stock, if and when the IPO takes place, and the corresponding risk could be greater than is suitable for clients. Moreover, the team sees opportunities for investing in space exploration more broadly, so one key area of research is funds that bundle together investments in companies in the space subsector. Such a fund could provide clients exposure to companies in this area, potentially including SpaceX, while making it less likely that volatility would pose inappropriate risk for clients.

One document about the space subsector is publicly available at The Emerging Space Economy. The Piton team is not recommending any specific fund or investing in this area at all, but this document is one resource that they had on hand during their deliberations. Every client’s situation is unique, so clients should consult with their Piton advisor about what aligns best with their goals with respect to any investment or financial decision. The Piton Investment Team will continue monitoring and updating Piton portfolios, so that your advisor can work to find the best fit for you.
